BIOGRAPHY

Hugh Coleman, a native Texan, has a long record of service to the law enforcement community and the community at large. Prior to entering private legal practice, Coleman served as Counsel to the Sheriff as a Denton County Assistant District Attorney. In this capacity, Coleman provided legal guidance to the Denton County Sheriff’s Department and Denton County Constables on matters that included employment issues, department policies, operations and both state and federal litigation. Prior to his service with Denton County, Coleman served as an Assistant County Attorney in El Paso, Texas where his duties included advising county departments and elected officials.

Coleman is an active member of his community, serving in a variety of leadership positions. Currently, he serves as a Foundation Board Member for North Central Texas College as well as a District Committee Member for the Boy Scouts of America - Longhorn Council, Frontier Trails District. He also serves as a Precinct Chairman on the Denton County Republican Executive Committee. Coleman is a past Board Member of Community in Schools North Texas and a past volunteer for the Sanger Special Olympics.

In addition to his community service, Coleman is an active member of the legal community. He currently serves as President-Elect of the Denton County Bar Association and is a past President of the Denton County Young Lawyers Association. Coleman was also instrumental in the creation of the highly acclaimed Denton County Alternative Dispute Resolution Program (DCAP), which provides pro bono and low cost mediation services to residents of Denton County. Coleman is also a past Director of the Texas Young Lawyer’s Association, receiving the President’s Award of Merit for exemplary service to the public and bar in 2003 and 2005.

Coleman is married to Bernadette, a graduate of Texas Woman's University, who serves as an Occupational Therapist with the Denton County Special Education Co-Op. They reside in Denton with their children, Ben and Helena, ages 4 and 3. Coleman is a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton.

Coleman earned a B.A. from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas and a Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa, College of Law, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Coleman is a member of the Texas Bar and is licensed to practice in the United States District Court, Northern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas as well the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit.
